How to Feel Hygge on a Snowy Day

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series On such a day Series

On a snowy day, early in the morning when you first wake up, breathe out deeply against a cold window and trace your initials or even a heart in the fog your breath creates. You’re an adult, you’re allowed to be mischievous! Be prepared if the power goes out because then you can have a special day! Snow is one of the most beautiful creations of God. It creates a mysterious blanket of silence, if you’re listening. It dulls the unnecessary noise around us, and you can focus more clearly on the sounds of nature that are alive in the snow. Watch clumps of snow drop from tree branches, squirrels scurrying to find their food and birds leaving the tiniest of footprints on snow covered surfaces. Open your curtains wide so you can watch the snow falling magically to the ground, everything fresh, clean and white. Light a fire, an oil lamp or candles and bring out lots of blankets even if you don’t need them. Heaps of blankets help you embrace the feeling of hibernation and safety. If you have power, bake bread, a favorite dessert or make a soup or stew that is hearty so you can look forward to a tasty treat later in the day as it gets dark. If you do lose power, pull out your favorite, well-read book from your shelves and curl up in your favorite chair. Spend hours playing your favorite board games or build a sheet tent and relish being held hostage from using technology. Notice your choices in how you choose to spend this snowy day. Go outside and make snow angels, build a snowman, find a hill to slide on, host a snowball fight and bring your neighbors fresh baked cookies. Is there a shut in you know who may need help? Stop by, shovel their walkway or bring them some soup. Even sitting with them for a while will make a snowy day feel like a day very well spent. And you will be building a new memory for yourself and for them.
